Institutions Offering Instrument Rating

•  Aeronav Academy, Johannesburg  
  General Requirements:
  
  The applicant for an instrument rating must:
  
  1. Hold a valid pilot license issued in terms of part 61.
  2. Hold a valid night rating, unless such rating is an integral part of the pilot license (i.e. CPL)
  3. Hold a valid Class II aviation medical certificate.
  4. Have successfully completed the appropriate training as prescribed in SA-CATS 61 at an approved aviation training organisation.
  5. Have passed all necessary theoretical examinations
  6. Have passed the necessary skills test with a SACAA accredited designated examiner.
  7. Hold a general radio license certificate.
  
  Flight Time (Hour) Requirements:
  
  The applicant for an instrument rating must have completed at least 50 hours flight time as PIC, of which 10 hours must have been flown on the category of aircraft for which the instrument rating is sought.
  The applicant must have completed 40 hours instrument flight training under instruction of which, at most, 20 hours may be in an FSTD approved for this purpose.
  In the case of an instrument rating for a multi-engine aeroplane, at least 5 hours of the instrument training referred to above must be conducted in a multi-engine aeroplane and shall be additional to the training towards an initial multi-engine class rating. A maximum of 3 of the 5 hours may be completed in an FSTD approved for this purpose.
•  AAA 4 Pilots, Durban  
  Admission criteria:
  (i) Hold a valid pilot license issued in terms of part 61.
  (ii) Hold a valid night rating, unless such rating is an integral part of the pilot license (i.e. CPL).
  (iii) Hold a valid Class II aviation medical certificate.
  (iv) Have passed to General Radio and Instrument rating theoretical examinations.
  (v) Hold a general radio license certificate.
  (vi) The applicant for an instrument rating must have completed at least 50 hours flight time as PIC, of which 10 hours must have been flown on the category of aircraft for which the instrument rating is sought.
  (vii) The applicant must have completed 40 hours instrument flight training under instruction of which, at most, 20 hours may be in an FSTD approved for this purpose.

•  Virginia Flight School, Durban  
  The Instrument Rating is a rating that can be added onto either the Private Pilot’s Licence or the Commercial Pilot’s Licence, and enables the pilot to fly under IFR (Instrument Meteorological Conditions).
  
  The pilot will have to undergo extensive ground and flight training in order to prepare for the Instrument Rating Test.
  
  In order to test the candidate will need to have:
  
  1. 40 hours of Instrument flight time (under instruction). Of which, 20 hours can be completed on an approved flight simulator.
  2. Hold a valid Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot’s Licence.
  3. Hold a Valid Class 1 medical.
  4. Completed the required ground training
  5. Completed the Instrument Rating Examination
  A Pilot who holds an Instrument Rating will have the expertise and qualifications to fly with reference to the flight instruments alone, without having to look outside the aircraft. The completion of an Instrument Rating can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, aspects of the training process.
•  Johannesburg School of Flying, Johannesburg  
  The following are the requirements for this program:
  
  (i) One must hold a valid Private or Commercial Pilot License.
  
  (ii) Hold a Class I medical certificate.
  
  (iii) Have a valid Night Rating on your License. The 10 hours done during your Night Rating will be counted towards your Instrument Rating training.
  
  (iv) Pass a General Radio License exam.
  
  (v) Successfully pass the online Instrument Rating examination (pass mark 75%).
  
  (vi) Complete 40 dual hours of Instrument flying time, of which 20 hours can be done on an approved simulator.
  
  (vii) Pass a practical flight test with a Grade I Designated Flight Examiner.
  
  (viii) Have flown 50 hours cross country time as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
  
  (ix) Once all requirements are met, all documentation is sent to the CAA and a fee must be paid in order to include the instrument rating in your License.
•  Afrika Union Aviation Academy, Mahikeng  
  The instrument rating is issued so pilots can fly into weather which is below VFR [Visual Flight Rules]. This allows a pilot to fly through clouds or land in reduced visibility. This rating is absolutely essential for airlines and corporate operators to operate in almost all weather.
  
  PREREQUISITES
  - Applicant must have a Private Pilot License or higher.
  - Applicant must have a valid Category 3 medical or higher.
  
  REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INSTRUMENT RATING
  - 50 hours cross-country flying Pilot In Command.
  - 40 hours of instrument flying.
  - Maximum of 20 hours can be done on a flight simulator.
  - Applicant under gos ITR cross-country along with a flight Instructor where shoots 3 different instrument approaches at 3 different Airports.
  - Applicants must pass a written exam with a grade of at least 70%.
  - Applicants must successfully pass a flight test

  The Prospective Student Must:
  
  Be in possession of a valid PPL.
  Have completed the Night Rating course.
  Obtain a General Radio operators Licence. (Course provided).
  Pass the CAA prescribed theoretical examinations (8).
  Have accumulated a minimum of 100 hours pilot-in-command (PIC) (of which 50 hours must be cross-country experience and a further 40 hours of instrument flying (IF) of which 20 may be undertaken on CAA-approved flight simulators).
  Pass a practical flight test with a CAA examiner.
  Renewal of the instrument rating requires maintaining a valid Pilot Licence by passing an annual flight test.

  (a) Helicopter Instrument Rating
