    Course Entry Requirements:
    In order to be admitted to MMed degree course a candidate must:
    (a) Be in possession of MBChB or equivalent degree and be registered with the Health Professions
    Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner;
    (b) Be appointed to a Registrar's post recognised by the HPCSA. This post must be occupied for the
    full duration of registration as required under these rules;
    (c) Meet any other requirements that may be enunciated in the rules for the specific degree for which
    registration is requested.

    Course Duration:
    (a) The duration of the MMed degrees will be a minimum of five years
    (b) The maximum will be seven years.

    • Recommendations for appointment of registrars include the following:
    - Successful completion of the primary examination of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) (FC Orth(SA) Primary);
    - At least 18 months’ experience in Orthopaedics under supervision of a specialist, after completion of community service;
    - Appropriate diplomas, for instance Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Basic Surgical Principles; and
    - A basic research project on an orthopaedic topic and/or a Diploma in Orthopaedics.

    Course Duration: 5 years

    Admission Requirements:
    MBChB (or equivalent) degree or relevant medical degree with modules equivalent to at least the first two years of the MBChB degree
    Currently registered as a physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and must have been registered for at least one year

    Duration of study:
    5 years, full-time.
