  Course content
  
  (i) Introduction to Gen Am – Accent, Dialect and Idiolect – listening to examples – the development of GenAm as a construct – using the tools of articulation, vocal posture and prosody – signature sounds of GenAM – introduction to using phonetic symbols as a tool.
  
  (ii) Lexical sets, vowel drills and diagnostics – identifying where you need to do the most work – drills for GenAm vowels – monopthongs, dipthongs and tripthongs – ear training exercises – text exercises.
  
  
  (iii) GenAm consonants – adjustments to consonants in the initial, medial and final positions – drills for consonants – using a sound adjustment matrix – text exercises – conversation exercise, stress and intonation – assimilation and other peculiarities – consolidation of matrix technique – developing confidence without a text – experimenting with vocal posture and characterization (character idiolect).
  
  
  (iv) Troubleshooting individual challenges – work with an unseen text – conversation and improvisation Consolidation and Wrap-up – specific drills for specific challenges – matrix exercise – improv exercise – performance of text.
