Institutions Offering PhD in Political Science

•  Babcock University, Ilishan Remo  
  Course entry requirements:
  1) An MSc or MA degree in Political Science or cognate disciplines from Babcock University, or from any other institution recognized by the BU Senate, with at least a CGPA of 60% or 4.0 on a 5.0 scale, in order to quality for regular admission to the PhD programme.
  
  2) Candidates who score between 3.5 and 3.99 on a 5.0 scale or 55-59% at the MSc/MA may be admitted under conditional status to the PhD programme, provided that they successfully complete a minimum of 15 additional credits in Master’s-level coursework in Political Science at Babcock University prior to commencing any coursework in the PhD in Political Science programme.
  
  3) Candidates whose Masters’ degrees (MSc or MA) are from other disciplines outside Political Science shall be required to complete any courses (including a Master’s thesis) that are lacking in the transcript when compared with the Babcock University MSc Political Science programme. In such cases, the completed Master’s degree and any remedial coursework must attain the required proficiency of 60% for regular admission into the PhD programme.
  
  4) Professional certificates/degrees or professional experience shall not be considered as relevant for direct admission into the PhD programme. Prospective candidates who are holders of professional degrees shall be required to take remedial credits at the MSc level, based on perceived deficiencies in the transcripts presented. Furthermore, holders of professional degrees who were not required to complete a thesis/project in the course of such prior qualifications will be required to complete a thesis among other requirements before being admitted into the PhD programme.
  
  5) Candidates admitted conditionally/provisionally into the PhD programme cannot take PhD-level courses until they have satisfied remedial course requirements stipulated for their admission.
•  Lagos State University, Lagos  
  Course entry requirements:
  -Applicants must possess a Master of Science [M.Sc.] in Political Science with CGPA weighted average not less than 4.0, apart from other pre-requites spelt out in the University regulations for postgraduate studies.
  Also admission requirements include a brief satisfactory statement of research in the intended area of research and an oral Ph.D qualification examination by a multi-disciplinary panel constituted by the department.
  
  Course duration: Minimum of 6 Semesters and Maximum of 10 Semesters
  
  For extension beyond the specified maximum period, a special permission of the Postgraduate
  Board shall be required.
  
•  Edo State University, Uzairue  
  Course entry requirements:
  -Master’s degree with a weighted average score of 60% and above (CGPA of not less than 4.0 on a 5 point scale)
  
  -Candidates who do not make up to 60% (≥ 55% or CGPA of not less than 3.5 on a 5 point scale) or deficient in some prerequisite courses especially from another institution may be required to register for the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme. The Department may prescribe appropriate courses for candidates whose academic record is considered deficient for the area of specialization.
  
  -In addition, PhD applicants should submit a concept note/ research proposal of not more than 450 words along with their application form
•  University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nsukka  
  Course entry requirements:
  -Master’s Degree in relevant areas from the University of Nigeria or other recognized Universities with at least 3.50 GPA on a 5-point scale. In addition to the above, all candidates must satisfy the Departmental O’Level and/or Direct Entry general entry requirements for degree programmes.
  
  
  
  Course duration: 6 Semesters minimum and 10 semesters maximum for Full-Time; and 8 Semesters minimum and 12 semesters maximum for Part Time.

  Course entry requirements:
  -Applicants shall possess the Bachelor and Master’s Degrees of Covenant University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Covenant University in the relevant disciplines. To qualify for direct entry into the Ph.D degree programme, a candidate shall have a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5.00 scale or equivalent (60%) in the Master’s (M.A/M.Sc/M.Eng/M.Tech) degree result.

  a) Every candidate must have a Master’s degree in his/her area of specialization with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 or 60%.

  c) Those who have CGPA of 3.50 – 3.99 or 55% and above in Master’s degree programme can apply.
  
  d) Candidates in (c) above will have to go through a conversion process into Ph.D. programme.

  -Candidates must have scored a minimum of 60% (B grade) in the Master of Science degree of any university recognized by the Senate in relevant disciplines. Candidates with M.Phil certificates from recognized University are also eligible for admission. Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity as well as effective decision-making and problem-solving potentials.

  Applicants should possesses a Master degree relevant to the intended programme. However, such intending candidate should have scored:
  -an average of at least 60% (3.5 CGPA) in his/her Master degree programme.
